On October 26, 2010, several people gathered in the main hall of Chrisland Schools, Opebi, Ikeja. The event was the teenagers’ conference organised by Unveiling Africa foundation. Secondary school students, teachers, reporters, all filled the hall to listen the young ones express their hope for a better Nigeria.
The event started with an address by the chairman of the occasion, Mr Femi Adesina of Sun Newspapers; this was followed by a speech by UVA founder, Chizoba Imoka.
The event featured musical performances by Lala, students of Command Day Secondary School, Oshodi and a thought-provoking drama on the frustrations of the Nigerian teenager. Mrs Kunbi Wuraola of Junior Achievement Nigeria challenged the Nigerian teenager to stand up for change and be the best at what they do. There was also an interactive session where the students were broken into several groups; one of these sessions was facilitated by Adaobi Nwaubani, winner of the 2010 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize.
The climax of the event was the presentation of gifts to the winners of the essay competition held earlier in the year. Winners include Opeoluwa Otegbade, Chartered College – 1st Prize who won the first prize in the Junior Secondary School Category and Ugoeze Uchegbu of Maryland Comprehensive College who clinched the prize in the Senior Secondary School Category.
