As you may already know we kicked off our Farafina Celebrates Nigeria @ 50 month with a book reading at Ansar-ud-Deen College, Isolo last week. The event opened with our guests, journalist Toyin Akinosho and on-air personality/writer, Tosyn Bucknor talking with the students about the importance of reading and literacy to one’s career. Next, Tosyn read an excerpt from one of her favorite African books, Zahrah the Windseeker (a Farafina Books title). The excerpt was very apt for the crowd of young, attentive audience, as it deals with the main character, Zahrah’s, struggle for acceptance among the “cool” crowds at school and her grandfather’s assurance that she is fine just the way she is!
Several students had questions for our guests from tips for reading faster to how one can combine being a lawyer and a writer! We are proud to say many students were definitely inspired by our guests and their answers. As in all our school visits this month, Farafina proudly presented the top Literature and English students with our VIP gift packs. We also donated 20 copies of Purple Hibiscus to the school library. Purple Hibiscus has recently been added to theWAEC list and is currently being read by the senior students at Ansar-ud-Deen.
Next stop: Festac Grammar School with Omawumi. Wednesday, October 13, 2010. 12-2pm. Won’t you join us in encouraging our future generation?
